Dave and Gary's Top Toy Test

BMW Z3 Roadster 1.9

Z3

I took this car for a little run from my home near Glasgow to Land's End, in order to have a thorough test. I was worried that it may be too small to be comfortable on such a long journey, as I am 6 foot 2 and not small. The car is usually driven by Elaine, so this was my first chance for a long drive.

The first thing you notice is how many people look at the car. Having been around for a couple of years now since it was first seen in the James Bond movie Goldeneye, it is amazing how many people react as if they have never sen the car before.

We set off from home and headed South, with no plans. The car was very nice on motorways, feling like a solid saloon. This car has all the build quality you would expect from BMW, everything feels solid and reliable.

We were heading past Manchester when we made a snap decision to cross the country and spend some time in the Peak district of Derbyshire, a place that niether of us had ever been before.

This gave me a chance to try the car on some country roads after a long motorway run. At the leather bound wheel, the Z3 handles superbly, the almost perfect front/rear weight balance enabling it to sweep surely into the severest corner without fuss or drama.

Hold this review - just driven the TVR Griffith. Z3 demoted by one top.

Dave & Gary's test Results

Upside: Excellent handling, stunning looks, good value for money, top chick magnet.
Downside: Not enough power, could be more fun, plastic rear window apt to mark and crease, definite girl's car.
Rating: 3 Tops Sorry - 2 Tops after the Griff.

Note: This car may be available for sale due to recent arrival of brat.*
